In 2021 Bean and Goose customers raised €5000 to purchase a motorised canoe for the community of Chachi families that grow the cocoa beans that are grown for our couverture. In May 2022 the Chachi families received their motor and materials and built their new canoe. #goodchocolatedoesgood
Raising €5,000 for a motorised canoe
To create our couverture chocolate, we exclusively partner with 'Original Beans', who produce our organic-certified, ethically sourced cacao. Our single origin cocoa is sourced from Pacific cloud forest on the edge of the Cotacachi Cayapas Nature Reserve in the Esmeraldas Province, Ecuador.
The indigenous Chachi Communities grow cocoa beans many hours up the Cayapas river. Growing in this remote region requires the beans to be transported by river to Loma Linda, where they are dried, fermented and sent on their next journey to us. Hiring a boat to make this journey is costly and significantly reduces the income the families make from the cocoa bean harvest.
Together with our customers, we invested in the future of the farmers with a donation of €5,000 for a motorised canoe for the Chachi Community. This canoe will enable them to be self-sufficient — reducing costs and ensuring they get a full return for the cacao they carefully produce.
